A virtual private networking (VPN) is an application that allows you to connect to a server that has the same or similar encryption settings as the internet.
VPNs are widely used in countries around the world and have been in use since the late 1990s, though the number of users has steadily grown since then.
VPN services such as Tor are popular because they hide your identity and online location.
Some of the most popular services are available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and some other countries.

But there’s a downside to using VPNs: they’re also a great way to hide your location.
In a recent CBC News investigation, we found that most VPNs do not encrypt your traffic, which means it can be intercepted by some malicious actors.
There are a few good ways to block unwanted websites or data from being passed around.
One of the best ways is to use an anonymous VPN.
Read on to learn how to use one that hides your location and prevents other sites from intercepting your traffic.
Privacy can be a tricky subject, but the good news is that there are a number of ways to protect your privacy.
Here are a couple of ways you can protect your anonymity.
Hide your location When using a private VPN, you can always be anonymous.
This is especially important when you’re on a government-approved server or VPN service.
If you’re connected to a VPN service that’s run by a trusted third party, the user will be able to see what other people are doing on the network.
That way, they can decide how to protect their privacy and prevent their location from being tracked.
Hide the server address If you connect to the internet through a VPN, the server’s IP address will always be visible.
But you can change this so that it’s hidden from view.
For example, you might want to hide the server IP address from people in your immediate vicinity.
Or, you could choose a different server to hide from your Internet Service Provider (ISP) provider.
In either case, the VPN service won’t be able see what the IP address of the VPN server is.
You can change the server server address in the settings on your VPN server.
Use an anonymous proxy If you use a VPN server that’s running an anonymous service, you’re in control of the server location, too.
You’re not connected to the VPN servers that host the VPN services.
But a proxy service will allow you to use the server you choose for your VPN connection.
When you connect, the proxy will hide the IP addresses of the servers it’s connecting to.
This will help you avoid the possibility of someone watching your connection from afar.
Block access to the server If you’ve set up a proxy that allows access to your private VPN server, the site will have no way to connect or communicate with you.
Instead, it’ll redirect traffic to the other server.
This can happen if a user or an external service hijacks your connection and tries to use your VPN.
This could happen even if you are the primary user of the proxy server.
If that happens, the website will be unable to access the server or any data on it.
It’ll also likely be blocked from accessing the Internet by other servers on the Internet.
Use a VPN to hide traffic If you set up an anonymous server and use an encrypted proxy, you don’t have to worry about a VPN connection being intercepted by anyone.
Instead of sending your encrypted traffic to a third-party server, you send it to the encrypted server and that’s it.
But the encrypted traffic isn’t encrypted with the user’s public key, so it’s not encrypted with your private key.
You’ll still be able, however, to read the encrypted data that’s sent to the proxy.
This allows you not only to hide IP addresses, but also your physical location and any other information you store on your computer.
If the proxy has been hacked or a data breach has occurred, you’ll be able tell if someone has accessed your computer by looking at the IPs of your browser history.
The same technique works when you connect through an encrypted VPN.
