The best jobs for industrial engineers are typically jobs in the high-tech sector, but there are many more opportunities for engineers working in the construction and transportation industries.
According to a report from CareerCast, the number of engineering jobs increased 7% from 2015 to 2020, with the highest growth in the automotive industry.
“With the industry so competitive, the skills required to work in it are just as competitive,” says CareerCast analyst Kristin Eversen.
“And when it comes to engineering, it’s just as important to know your market.”
Industry experts say the skillset for a successful engineer is often a combination of technical skills, interpersonal skills and social skills.
“There are lots of things that people have to be good at to be successful,” says Andrew Smith, an engineering professor at Georgetown University.
“You’ve got to be able to work with people, have a passion for something, have the right mindset and you have to work hard.
There are so many things that you can learn from working in engineering.”
Smith says if you’re interested in the engineering industry, there are plenty of opportunities for you to find work.
“It’s not like there’s a shortage of jobs.
There’s a lot of opportunities out there, and there are a lot more engineers who are qualified to work for the companies that hire them,” he says.
The good news for engineers looking to land a high-paying job in the tech industry is that the jobs are getting more and more competitive.
The number of job openings for engineers has been steadily increasing for decades.
In 2016, there were 1.2 million engineering jobs, up 8% from the previous year.
“What’s interesting is the number has continued to go up over the last few years.
It’s certainly a bit different than it was 15 years ago,” says Eversed.
“It’s certainly much more competitive, which is good.”
There are plenty more options than just engineering for engineers.
“The number one job that I hear most often in the industry is a web designer, so they’re definitely going to be looking for jobs in that field,” says Smith.
“There’s also a lot in engineering that has a web design component.
There is an opportunity there.”
