Disney/Lucasfilm had teased the first new episode of Star Wars: The Force Awakens would air on Thursday, September 18th.
The trailer showed the rebels and Imperials battling a giant battle droid.
The first teaser for Episode VII was posted on Instagram and Facebook, along with a countdown of the premiere dates.
It had not been announced which Star Wars film would be the new one, and fans of the franchise were quick to speculate as to what it would be.
The official website for the new film has yet to reveal any details, but we do know a few things.
It will be the sixth Star Wars installment, the first to be released in 4K, and will focus on the return of Lando Calrissian (played by Harrison Ford).
“Episode VII will see the return and return of iconic characters from the Star Wars saga,” the site said.
“It will also focus on one of the most iconic moments in the history of Star War: The Old Republic: Luke Skywalker’s return.”
The trailer also showed a number of new characters in the film, including Princess Leia Organa (played, of course, by Daisy Ridley).
“Princess Leia Organas returns to the Rebel Alliance, and in Episode VII, she joins with the rest of the Rebel Command to fight to protect the future of the galaxy,” the film’s synopsis said.
But the most intriguing reveal was the appearance of Darth Vader (played also by Anthony Daniels) in the trailer.
“As Darth Vader’s new apprentice, Luke Skywalker (Harrison Ford) will be introduced to the world of the Force in Episode VIII,” the synopsis said, adding that the film will feature “the return of classic characters like Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Yoda.”
“This is the most exciting time of the Star War saga and we can’t wait for you to see it,” the trailer said.
The film’s official website says it will be released on September 20th, with more details to come.
